iPhone 13 Pro launch on time as Samsung reportedly begins production of 120Hz LTPO display

Published by

iPhone 13 Pro Updates: Apple is set to launch its iPhone 13 series on time this year as the productions of its parts have started. Samsung Display has started producing LTPO displays for Apple and is the only supplier for the tech giants.

These screens may have a 120Hz refresh rate with ProMotion technology and will be used for iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. Also Apple’s chip partner TSMC has started producing its A15 processors.

While both Samsung Display and LG Display will supply screens to this year’s Apple phones, it is said that the prior has got the bigger contract. Samsung Display is contracted to provide the advanced LTPO thin film transistor(TFT) OLED panels.

These panels are marginally better than the regular OLED panels and will be combined with a much higher refresh rate and Apple’s ProMotion technology. However, these will only be used for iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. This is in line with Apple’s recent way of keeping their “Pro” models more premium and feature-rich.

On the other hand, LG Display will be providing panels for iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. They will feature an LTPS(low-temperature polycrystalline silicon) TFT OLED panel.

Like previous models, they will have a regular 60Hz refresh rate. BOE is also said to be providing Apple the same panels for these models, but their availability is down at the moment.

One of the main reasons Samsung Display is alone responsible for supplying Apple with the LTPO panels is their sheer production capacity. They are set to produce up to 130 million units which is much higher than LG Display’s 50 million capacity.

This might also be why Apple decided to share the workload for LTPS panels between LG Display and BOE. Another interesting thing is Apple’s positive hope for its Pro series this year. Given the LTPO panels to be provided, it is certainly expecting a lot of sales. But if previous sales are any indication, Apple’s regular models prove to be the hotter sale.

All in all, it’s a good sign that Apple has started producing its display panels earlier than last year. For iPhone 12, the productions were a month delayed compared to this year. But that was mostly due to the shock effect of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This time the situation is better from a production point of view. Users can expect the launch of Apple’s iPhone 13 series around September, the usual time as in previous years.
