The Staircase on HBO: Sophie Turner joins the cast with Colin Firth and Toni Collette

Published by

The Staircase Updates: The American actress, known for her role as Sansa Stark in ‘Game of Thrones, returns with this project of height to television after her cinematographic adventures in the ‘X-Men’ saga and other films.

Sophie Turner has been chosen to expand the luxury cast of The Staircase, the miniseries that HBO Max is preparing with Toni Collette, Juliette Binoche, Rosemarie DeWitt, Parker Posey, and Colin Firth, who will be the protagonist after Harrison Ford left the project.

The Staircase on HBO Cast

Firth will play novelist Michael Peterson, accused of murdering his wife Kathleen in 2001, in this series based on true events. Sophie Turner, meanwhile, will play one of her adopted daughters, Margaret Ratliff, according to US media such as The Hollywood Reporter.

This will be the first television project of substance for the actress after playing Sansa Stark during all eight seasons of Game of Thrones. Since then, Turner has starred in Survive, one of the series on the short-lived short video platform Quibi, and has been seen in two films in the series. X-Men ( Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix ) is the young version of Jean Gray. In addition, last November he signed for The Prince, an animated series on HBO Max in which he will give the voice of Princess Charlotte.

As for The Staircase, the project is based on the 2004 French docuseries signed by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade, who has added new information on the Peterson case over the years. In 2018, with its arrival on Netflix, the docuseries achieved great notoriety, and now, three years later, HBO Max is preparing a fictionalized adaptation of it. The docuseries, as will the miniseries, tells how Peterson publicly defended that his wife had died after falling down the stairs of his house. However, the police always suspected that he had actually beaten her to death and arranged the crime scene to look like an accident.

As Variety reported long ago, the scripts began to be developed in 2019, by Antonio Campos and Maggie Cohn, who also serve as executive producers. Campos will also direct six of the episodes. HBO Max will co-produce the series with Annapurna Television.
