The Last Kingdom Season 5 Explained

Season 5 of The Last Kingdom will be soon airing on Netflix. Netflix has announced this bitter-sweet news that it will be the final season of the show. Netflix announced on 30th April 2021 that it has cancelled The Last Kingdom but did not give any specific reason.

It is known that Netflix has not renewed popular shows after two or three seasons, so the decision to cancel The Last Kingdom may not come as a huge surprise to many fans. The cancellation did prompt some fans to petition for a series continuation.

Cancellation of the show is surprising because of its massive popularity amongst viewers and the fact that Cornwell’s source material consists of 13 novels. Because of 13 source material novels, The Last Kingdom should have extended to sixth or seventh season.

Cancellation of The Last Kingdom does not necessarily mean that the entire novel storyline will not be adapted. The end of the series might set up a movie release which would be based on the last three of books of Cornwell: War of the Wolf, Sword of Kings and War Lord.. It is just a speculation which might not be true.

The Last Kingdom season 5 may cover the remaining source material but that would significantly alter the structural spacing and may lead to plot issues that would upset the fans.

It is a bitter-sweet news for the fan base because, though a new season is around the corner, it will also be the last season.
