The Nevers: Mary’s Message of Hope Is Cut Tragically Short

The Nevers Updates: Mary Brighton is eager to express her song of hope with the Touched of London in the next episode of The Nevers, but someone has other ideas.

The Touched, a group of people with supernatural powers, some more astounding than others, were revealed in the premiere episode of The Nevers.

When Touched serial killer Maladie took over the opera during a rehearsal, a new Touched person moved forward: Mary Brighton, whose real vocal performance never made it past the chorus, but whose Touched singing voice allows her to convey a message of hope that only other Touched can hear.

Penance creates an amplifier she and Amalia intend to use to share Mary’s song with all the Touched in London in the hopes of bringing more of them to the orphanage in the third episode, “Ignition.” Amalia soon recognises the importance of Mary’s talent and its power to pull the Touched together, so in the third episode, “Ignition,” Penance creates an amplifier she and Amalia plan to use to share Mary’s song with all the Touched in Despite the fact that their scheme goes off without a hitch, disaster hits shortly after.

Mary reveals early in the show that she’s having trouble recalling her music after being abducted and almost killed by Maladie. Although Amalia is able to wait, Mary is worried that the song isn’t coming and she’s not sure whether she can use it to summon the Touched to the orphans.

Amalia seems to have a mission other than keeping the Touched secure, but she declines to say what it is. As a result, Mary is still struggling.

That is before Lucy takes home a lady who welcomes the Touched to Dr Hague’s lair, which they mistakenly believe to be a safe haven. Dr Hague conducts tests on the Touched, and the woman acts as the face who welcomes them in, despite the fact that she is well aware that she is taking them to their doom.

Over the process of interviewing her, it becomes apparent that the woman is so at ease with it; her own daughter was touched, and the woman drowned her because she thought her talents were an affront to God.

This is enough to make Mary understand how persecuted the Touched are, and her determination to assist them allows her to rediscover her music.

Mary tells everyone to gather in a park to have Penance’s amplifier ready. The Touched all over the city hear and are encouraged by her music as she approaches the device and begins to sing.

Clearly, it’s working as Amalia had thought. But, before Mary can finish her song, a bullet rips through her breast, followed by a flurry of others.

Inspector Mundi, who was seeing Mary sing, runs up to the man with the rifle, who turns out to be a member of Maladie’s gang, who was responsible for the murders of operagoers. He was also the only one who was apprehended and jailed.

However, he was released from prison earlier in the show, and it appears that whoever was responsible tried to use him for a specific reason. Mundi kills the man, but not before Mary dies, causing the Touched much grief.

The concern now is who may be responsible for Mary’s death. Only a strong individual could ensure Maladie’s murderous gang member’s release while also learning where and when Mary planned to ramp up her album.

Lavinia Bidlow and Lord Gilbert Massen are the only characters we know who have the contacts to pull it off so far. Could one of them actually do anything like that? As The Nevers progresses, we’ll find out.
