Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Trailer Teases Devastating New Threat

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Updates: The first preview for Star Trek: Discovery season 4 has been released, and it provides an exciting glimpse at what lies ahead for the members of the titular ship.

The first Star Trek series from CBS All Access (now Paramount+) is still going solid, due to a major timeframe shift that occurred during its second season. Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery saw Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew travel to the 32nd century, a time period never before explored in the Star Trek series.

Then, Burnham and some others had to deal with a planet without the Federation while still trying to figure out what caused the Burn, the enigmatic incident that caused the Federation’s demise.

Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery ended previously this year, but production on the fourth season is now well advanced. Owing to the coronavirus pandemic, which also affected fellow Paramount+ series Star Trek: Picard, the hiatus until season 3 was longer than usual.

Fortunately, Discovery did not finish on a massive cliffhanger this time, but rather on an optimistic note. Burham has been appointed captain of the USS Discovery, a development that has been in the works for months. By the time season 4 premieres, she’ll hopefully have relaxed into her new job, because there’s a new challenge on the horizon.

Martin-Green debuted the first trailer for season 4 after the “Women In Motion” panel at Paramount+’s First Contact Day function. The minute-and-a-half clip immerses audiences in the story, as Discovery and the fledgling Federation face a strange, one-of-a-kind threat: a catastrophic gravitational phenomenon. Most intriguingly, the trailer indicates that the 4th Season will premiere later this year rather than in 2022.

Alex Kurtzman, the showrunner of Star Trek: Discovery, previously announced that the season 4 protagonist may not be a living, breathing being, but rather something entirely new.

According to Anthony Rapp’s Stamets, it’s a power that spans “five lightyears through,” as the above teaser shows. The teaser shows a brief snapshot of the devastation that this anomaly will wreak, and it’s a terrifying sight. Burnham and the Discovery team would have to collaborate with a large number of people outside of the ship to fight it.

The 4th Season of Star Trek: Discovery appears to be the most promising in terms of that thread. A common critique leveled at newer Trek material is that it has strayed from the franchise’s central themes of adventure and solidarity.

The Federation re-establishing itself in Season 4 aims to tell a tale of people banding together in the face of an unfathomable disaster. Season 4 looks good so far, and it will be fun to see wherever it goes.
