Marcella Season 4 Updates: According to actor Anna Friel, the ITV crime drama Marcella was only meant to be a trilogy, but a return after season three is possible. “The end of the third season is very much left open,” Friel told Hello Magazine ahead of the UK season premiere last month. I guess it depends on how much the audience enjoys it.”
Outside of the UK, Netflix launched Marcella season three in summer 2020, but ITV viewers had to wait until January 2021 to learn what happened to the troubled detective after she was hired as an undercover officer at the end of season two.
All eight episodes of the new season are currently available to watch on ITV Hub, with new episodes airing on ITV1 every Tuesday at 9 p.m. Fans who have already binge-watched the entire series are now asking if it will be the last time they see DS Backland.
Marcella boards a private jet to an unknown destination in the season three finale, accompanied by Katy Barrett, the orphaned toddler daughter of Stacey and Bobby Barrett, members of the Maguire crime family.
Marcella transferred the entirety of the Maguire fortune (approximately £24 million) to a secret bank account “for Katy” before leaving the Maguire mansion, though, by the looks of her flash ride and new look, she was also digging into the cash.

Den of GeekAdopting/abducting baby Katy may be the way to Friel’s salvation. Marcella’s PTSD as a result of the death of her baby daughter Juliet is a recurring theme in the series.
The detective developed dissociative identity disorder as a result of the trauma of losing Juliet, which included entering fugue states in which she blacked out and awoke with no recollection of what she’d done.
Marcella relived her traumatic memories of Juliet’s death via regressive hypnotherapy in season two, learning that she had inadvertently killed her baby while trying to calm her.
The guilt of that realization caused her to have a nervous breakdown, during which she signed over custody of her two older children to her ex-husband, considered suicide, and then seriously cut her face and hair before vanishing when she was mistakenly identified as having died in a fire.
With a new baby, a new start in a new country (possibly Cuba, the destination to which the Maguire family intended to send Bobby Barrett when he went on the run after committing murder), and a new name (at the private airport, Marcella is referred to as “Miss Hart”), the character may be being given a tidy break from her past and a happy ending that lasts until the sunsets.
