Mortal Kombat Updates: Mortal Kombat’s re-start director Simon McQuoid explains that Jax’s origin story has been updated to make Sub-Zero the one who tears his arms away.

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid clarified why Jax’s cybernetic weapons are changing the backstory of the new film.

The film, released on April 16, features a large number of characters from the famous video game series, including Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), Kano (Josh Lawson), and Kung Lao (Max Huang). Many of these characters are joining McQuoid’s reboot almost intact, although certain key pieces have been updated.

Since Jax Briggs (played in a new film by Mehcad Brooks) was first featured in Mortal Kombat II, he had nothing of the cybernetic improvements that eventually became his trademark.

Various stories about how Jax obtained his robot weapons have appeared in the franchise over the years, ranging from voluntary modifications to the elimination of the sorcerer Ermac.

The latest film introduces a new story of origin, with Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) tearing off Jax’s human arms with his ice powers, leading to a spike in the cyborg.

The latest Mortal Kombat has also disclosed some of its other discrepancies from the source material, such as the inclusion of the new character Cole Young (Lewis Tan), Kano becoming Mortal Kombat hero, and the obvious absence of Johnny Cage. Most of the time, though, the film appears to hold faithful to the games.

The deaths of the trailer hark back to the violent fights of the games in ways that fans of the game have wanted to see brought to life on the television, sparking a high expectation of the release of the film.

Sub-Zero plays a vital role in the current Mortal Kombat, which appears to deviate from previous versions. There are two Sub-Zeros in the game – the older brother who becomes the bad, the corrupted ninja Noob Saibot, and the younger brother who usually plays the part of a hero.

The reboot edition appears to be breaking away from the former, but it is also likely that Cole Young is the younger Sub-Zero in disguise. Mortal Kombat is going to be premiered in theaters and on HBO Max from 16th April.
