Star Wars: Why Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan Struggled Against Darth Maul

Star Wars Updates: In Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace, Star Wars eventually exposed why Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi failed to beat Darth Maul.

Darth Maul stood at the heart of the film’s promotion when George Lucas released the prequel trilogy in 1999. We will at last show ourselves to the Jedi, he seethed, acting in the name of the Sith.

We will finally get vengeance. With Darth Maul finally facing Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his trainee, Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Phantom Menace ended. Qui-Gon is fighting for Anakin Skywalker, explained in a new Star Wars documentary by Lucasfilm’s Dave Filoni.

That’s why it’s the Duel of the Fates; this kid’s destiny, and [Anakin’s] life is going to be radically different based on how this war goes. The scene revealed the prowess of Darth Maul, as he fought successfully against not one but two Jedis.

Star Wars About Claudia Gray:

The Star Wars novel Into The Dark by Claudia Gray eventually explains that Darth Maul should take on two Jedi at once. The novel is set at the peak of the Age of the High Republic, some 200 years before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and it shows that the Jedi have stopped focusing on dueling with the lightsaber by that time.

The Sith were thought to be dead, and during the past few centuries only a handful of Jedi had fallen to the dark side; thus, Jedi had stopped practicing in ways that allowed them to participate in lightsaber battles because they were seen as needless.

Qui-Gon Jinn was not Darth Maul’s first survivor, actually. A Sith Master charged their apprentice to prove themselves by possessing the cyber crystal from a Jedi’s lightsaber in order to corrupt it and create their own sword, Star Wars comics have announced.

What’s more, the double-bladed lightsaber of Darth Maul obviously featured more than one cyber crystal, indicating over the years that he had picked off many Jedi from the shadows. He also killed Qui-Gon successfully but underestimated Obi-Wan at his expense.

There is no question that the news of the Sith’s return led the Jedi to change their training to begin tutoring students in other types of the lightsaber that are more appropriate for blade-on-blade fighting.

For instance, the favored form of Anakin Skywalker was Form V – built to offer an offensive edge to a lightsaber wielder while going up against a Sith. Ironically, though, it is Obi-Wan Kenobi who proved especially lethal to the Sith, including beating Darth Vader himself on Mustafar, Master of the defensive Type III.
