The Courier Trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch Smuggling Secrets in a Movie with Big Dad Movie Energy Energy Has ‘The Courier’ Trailer

Rachel Brosnahan and Jessie Buckley also appear in the film. The trailer for The Courier has been released by Lionsgate (formerly titled Ironbark, when it played at Sundance last year).

The film is based on the true story of British businessman Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch), who was hired to collaborate with Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze) by MI-6 and the CIA to smuggle information out of the Soviet Union, including the information needed to defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Adam Chitwood and I grabbed the Sundance movie, and we thought it had some fantastic daddy movie momentum where it looks intense enough to have real stakes but also reassuring in the machinations of the spy movie. That’s not quite an easy equilibrium to find, but it makes The Courier extremely enjoyable by not losing sight of the real people who risked their lives in the Cold War. It’s certainly worth trying out, and I can see it catching on with viewers for sure.

Check out the teaser below for The Courier. On March 19th, the film lands in theaters, and stars Rachel Brosnahan and Jessie Buckley, too.

For The Courier, below is the official synopsis:

THE COURIER is a true-life espionage thriller, the tale of Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch), an unassuming British businessman, drafted into one of the greatest geopolitical wars in history. He establishes a secret, risky relationship with Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze) at the behest of the UK MI-6 and CIA agent (Rachel Brosnahan) in an attempt to provide vital information needed to avert a nuclear conflict and defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis.
