Bridgerton Season 2: Why Marina’s Story Need To Change?

Bridgerton Season 2 Updates: Since Season 1 of Bridgerton has already changed too much from Julia Quinn’s novels, season 2 of Bridgerton needs to update the story of Marina Thompson.

Bridgerton Season 1 drew on the character of Marina Thompson from the Bridgerton novels, but the Netflix show needs to alter the story of Marina in season 2.

Bridgerton season 1, episode 1, “Diamond of the First Water,” introduces Marina Thompson (Ruby Barker), who has come to live with her distant cousins, the Featheringtons, from her home in the country.

Lady Featherington (Polly Walker) learns, soon after Marina’s arrival, that Marina is pregnant. Marina discovers how dire her situation has become after Marina declines to marry any of the suitors that Lady Featherington chose.

In Julia Quinn’s novel To Sir Phillip, With Affection, when Marina brews a poison juniper tea that could end her life, Bridgerton then foreshadows Marina’s fate. Marina Thompson is only briefly listed in Sir Phillip, With Love. Phillip marries his brother’s fiancĂ©, Marina Thompson when Phillip Crane’s brother is killed in combat.

Together, Phillip and Marina have two children: twins. Sometime later, she is taken over by Marina’s depression and she wants to drown herself in a bath. Phillip rescues her, but several days later, Marina dies.

Eloise Bridgerton sends her condolences after Marina’s death, because, in the novel, Marina is a distant cousin of the Bridgertons, not the Featheringtons.

Phillip and Eloise exchange letters and end up falling in love, suggesting that in someone else’s love story, Marina was originally nothing more than a prop. Since Bridgerton has changed the character of Marina so much from the book already, the show needs to give her a new story.

In Bridgerton season 1, Marina was as much a principal character as Penelope Featherington, Queen Charlotte, or any of the Bridgerton siblings (aside from Daphne, of course).

Bridgerton Season 2: who’s Marina?

It would be a monumental mistake for the show to return the role of Marina to “prop” status, not to mention that it would be a massive waste of the talent of Marina actress Ruby Barker.

Bridgerton needs to alter the story of Marina going forward in a way that respects the character that has become Marina, which could also be a brand-new character, totally original from To Sir Phillip, With Love.

Marina leaves London with Phillip Crane after following his suggestion at the end of Bridgerton season 1, episode 8, “After the Rain,” but the tale is not set in stone.

There are a variety of ways Bridgerton can give Marina a better story than making her die unexpectedly, so she’s out of the way to fall in love with Phillip and Eloise. Phillip was able to decide not to marry Marina, but to continue financially helping her, or to get married briefly and then to divorce after Marina’s child was born.

Of course, since production on Bridgerton season, 2 is expected to begin this spring, it is also likely that the Bridgerton showrunners have already written a different story for Marina.

In season 2, Ruby Barker is expected to return as Marina Thompson, but that has yet to be reported by ShondaLand, Bridgerton’s production company.

Marina Thompson, however, was a breakout character in season 1 who quickly became a favorite fan, so it seems appropriate to have her in season 2 and it just seems like her story hasn’t been told apart from that.

Hopefully, as it has already done, Bridgerton season 2 will continue to diverge from the books and give Marina a story that represents the character she’s become instead of the one originally in the novel.
