9-1-1 Season 4 Executive Producer Talks the Show’s Epic Return and Teases Chaos to Come

9-1-1 Season 4 Updates: In a way, since last March, it seems like we have been going through an extended episode of 9-1-1. Fortunately, however, tonight the much-more-entertaining Fox drama is back.

However, as the crew returns to Station 118, we will not totally avoid the pandemic, as executive producer Tim Minear made the decision to add COVID-19 into the plot of the episode.

Although I don’t want to see the shows subsumed in the pandemic, and I don’t believe viewers are watching this franchise to do something but hide from the real world when you do a first responder episode, I think that might have made the show a little too quaint to overlook, EW tells Minear.

Our whole mission line with 9-1-1 is to drive things, to make things bigger and louder, and more serious, and after March of last year, something happened, which is that the world got more moved than my show.

Does Minear say that when audiences are going through stakes that are too much higher than they are accustomed to existing, he wanted to work out how to increase stakes on a show that is about raising stakes?

9-1-1 will continue to delve into tales of systemic injustice as well, with Minear being motivated by the Black Lives Matter protests to further those plot points.

And before all of this happened, we had been discussing those topics and we were planning on continuing to pursue those theories, says Minear. But it’s not like the planet blew up, and then we all began to do the stuff in the news.

In a way, we were ahead of the curve a little bit. It’s an ugly slope to be ahead of, so you’ve got it there. Minear brought the former Los Angeles police officer and author Cheryl Dorsey to assist with those plot lines (Black and Blue). She sort of is, Minear says, Athena Grant.

Elsewhere, Minear says that Buck (Oliver Stark) is going to move on, so that his relationship with Abby (Connie Britton) has some resolution, but that he’s going to learn something he didn’t know about his life, too.

It will be a missing piece that will put to some sharp focus the idea of who Buck is, teases Minear. And this story will take place as we meet the parents of Buck and Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt).

It seems like, considering the worldwide pandemic, the show doesn’t slow down much at all. There is at least one upswing for Minear from being trapped at home. I was able to run two of my house shows, and I don’t have to wear socks, he says. 9-1-1 will return at 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18. On Fox ET.
