Dungeons & Dragons TV Show In Development From John Wick Writer

Published by

Dungeons and Dragons Updates: A TV series based on the popular Dungeons & Dragons tabletop game, which will be written by Derek Kolstad, author of John Wick, is now in development.

Hasbro is creating a TV series focused on the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy tabletop role-playing game, and they have tapped Derek Kolstad, the founder, and writer of the action-heavy John Wick franchise, to script and pitch the project.

Dungeons & Dragons have been around since 1974, but recently, with revenue increasing 20 percent from 2019 to 2020, it has undergone more of a revival.

General recognition and curiosity in the classic game are rising between portrayals of popular shows such as Stranger Things and the popularity of live stream series such as Vital Position.

Dungeons & Dragons is a fairly organized but yet open-ended game that requires its players to carry out a wide range of fantasy scenarios, known colloquially to fans as D&D.

Players go through a campaign involving magic, battle, and social experiences, a series of story-based adventures with few to no restrictions other than the creativity of the players. Dungeon Masters, who supervise the game and direct players through the plot, is responsible for campaigns.

Dungeons & Dragons: About THR report:

Hasbro’s entertainment studio, one, reveals that THR plans to make a live-action TV show for Dungeons & Dragons, and they have hired Kolstad to pitch and write it.

There is no storyline or cast information available because it’s all in such an early stage of production. Similarly, it appears like the series has not been sold to a network yet.

While there have not been many updates as to just what the plot will be – given the freshness of the coverage – Kolstad’s series will not be the only game-based upcoming publication.

EOne is also developing a live-action movie based on the franchise that supposedly stars Chris Pine, which is scheduled to be released in 2022.

Apart from the TV series and film, eOne is currently pursuing many more D&D-based filmed ventures, but no detail on them has yet been released by the company.

Although the next TV series and film are certainly thrilling for others, when it comes to filmed versions of the game, Dungeons & Dragons does not have a strong track record.

In the early 2000s, there was a poorly viewed live-action film trilogy and an anime series that in the 1980s had a lukewarm reception. The amount of D&D adaptations eOne has in the works may also easily contribute to oversaturation.

Yet the TV series has at least one point of leverage in its favor: Kolstad. As well as their thrilling action scenes, Kolstad’s John Wick movies are known for their heartbreaking moments and strong box office numbers.
