False Face Society appeared in batman for the first time. It was in December 1962. The gang was the result of some contest proposed by the clown prince. Well, the criminals were masked to hide their identities from one another.
These criminals were allowed to commit colorful crimes, while they dressed in clothes of some other profession.
This society saw it reborn with batman (1985). In this movie, the gang was lead by the black mask. The black mask is the owner of a vast collection of masks. He assigned masks to every criminal according to their specialty and works done.
In the modern Batman comics, the organization was led by Richard Sionis who is simply known as the mask.
