The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Updates: The MCU star has teased the story of the upcoming series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, as the program investigates who’s going to pick up the shield.
Anthony Mackie indicated the Falcon could not, after all, take the mantle of Captain America in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
The MCU star plays former Air Force pararescue airman Sam Wilson alias Falcon – his first live performance in 2014 was Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and since then, Sam has been Steve Rogers’, right-hand man.
After the events of Avengers: Endgame, now retired and aged Steve turned over his famous American Captain Shield to Falcon, urging him to retain it.
Sam’s obviously not happy going to Captain America just yet – next, he’ll be seen teaming up with the former foe turned hesitant ally Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, the original Marvel/Disney+ series that will be premiered in March.

Although the exact specifics of the storyline are still unclear, from The Falcon and The Winter Soldier trailer, it looks like Sam is grappling with the stigma that the Captain has left him with as he and Bucky struggle with the repercussions of Steve deciding to linger in the past.
Now, in an interview with SiriusXM, Mackie announced that Falcon and Winter Soldier were going to explore who is going to pick up the shield now that Captain America has retired – and also hinted that Falcon may not be the one to end up taking on the iconic role.
When asked if Falcon is now Captain America, Mackie answered, “No, we don’t know that yet. The episode, the premise of the show is essential, you know, and at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Cap agreed that he was going to retire and asked me if I was going to take the shield, but at no point in time, did I consent or suggest that I was Captain America…
So, the episode goes down the vein of who’s going to take the shield and who’s going to be Captain America if Steve doesn’t come back.”
It seems to be the U.S. Government may have other ambitions to maintain Cap’s legacy, with new character John Walker (Wyatt Russell) sporting the famous red, white and blue suit in some of the first promotional photos for Falcon and Winter Solider.
Moreover, the vast legacy of the First Avenger is obviously an extremely daunting one to live up to – even though Steve clearly thinks the Falcon is up to the test, it is fair for Sam to have reservations, particularly with no super-soldier serum readily available to bail him out.
