10. GEORGE AND IZZIE:

George and Izzie were incredibly close and highly dependent on each other during their time as interns. They supported each other and helped each other as they could. Although their friendship has received good comments, some called it toxic.

9. MEREDITH AND CRISTINA:

Meredith called Cristina her sister and told her that she was her family. The dynamic between these two incredibly talented and competitive women was wonderfully portrayed throughout the series. The two were independent and close, they showed that their friendship was very strong despite the difficulties.

8. PARTICIPATION IN THE HOSPITAL:

No other group of interns had such direct participation in the operating room and hospital as the first group. For example, Cristina was quite involved in Burke’s surgeries and supported him in the operating room when he had tremors. George’s observational skills also led him to identify a drunk anesthesiologist during surgery, and he even noticed Burke’s tremors.

7. SENSE OF TEAM SPIRIT:

Alex portrayed this point well when he told the Chief that they were all a team. He said that even if they disagreed with what the rest of his teammates had done, he wasn’t going to rat them out.

6. INVOLVEMENT WITH PATIENTS:

Denny Duquette was one of many patients the interns participated with. Katie Bryce even appeared in Meredith’s hearing. This shows how involved the first group of interns was with the patients. They went beyond what was required of them and were very involved.

5. BACKGROUND OF THE INTERNSHIPS:

From Stanford to state school, the five interns came from widely varied backgrounds. Their family history and history were very clearly evident in the various ways they interacted with each other and with others at the hospital. No other group of interns has had such detailed backstories as the first group.

4. BAILEY AS YOUR RESIDENT:

Miranda Bailey is a no-nonsense boss who kept inmates on their toes the entire time. She was an amazing leader and mentor, honing and grooming them to become the best. He was present as much as he could and was involved with them teaching them at all times.

3. INTERNSHIP RELATIONSHIPS:

The first group of interns had many romantic entanglements between them: Meredith and Derek, Cristina and Burke, Izzie and Alex, and George and Callie are just a few of the relationships the interns were in. The drama, chemistry, and problems they were involved in keeping the audience hooked on each episode.

2. HOUSE OF MEREDITH:

Meredith’s home was where the inmates spent much of their time. Meredith, Izzie, and George lived in the house, but the others also stayed there constantly. This showed that they were united and allowed them to get to know each other more.

1. NO OTHER SET OF INTERNSHIPS HAS BEEN SO POPULAR:

Grey’s Anatomy has been on the air for 17 seasons, and even though the writers tried to introduce new interns along the same lines as the first, it never worked. The new interns are obsolete, so the first group is the favorite.
