The Queen Gambit: Review & Everything fans should know

The Queen Gambit Update: Netflix’s binge watchable show The Queen’s Gambit is about a chess prodigy. The show’s director Marielle Heller,  who also has acted in the show, is highly praised as she almost threw herself into the role.

The show is set in the mid-1950s and early 1960s, The Queen’s Gambit was released on October 23, 2020. Within one month of streaming, it became Netflix’s most-watched scripted miniseries and also received critical acclaim for the performances of the stars and cinematography and production values. The chess community also praised it very much.

Filming

The filming of the show started in August 2019 in Cambridge and Berlin. 

Music

The music of the show was composed by Carlos. The music was at first only going to be piano-based, but they decided that an orchestra will seem more instrumentally deep. Beth’s growth in the show, both as a person and a chess player was shown by adding more and more instrumentation over time.

The show is based on the novel written by Walter Tevis, it revolves around the story of an orphan, Beth Harmon. She is extremely talented with chess. A housewife Mrs. Alma adopts Beth and her passion for chess grows as she starts competing around the nation. But, her passion for chess is cut off as she is addicted to tranquilizers.

Beth and Alma both struggle to find human connections and end up finding it in each other. Their relation changes into a friendship rather than a parental relationship. Alma supports her after she realizes how much money can be made from winning tournaments.
All the stereotypes are broken in this show and Taylor-Joy thinks that “they’re both such intricately broken people.”

She also said that she loved having Heller on set, “Marie is a gem kind of a person,” she said. “I adored every cell of her being. I love her.”
